A remarkable story of perseverance
I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman by the name of Chad Porter years ago while doing some work at the Wilmington Convention Center down here in southeastern North Carolina. He had come to speak to the staff about his life experiences. Porter was 15 when he was run over by a boat while competitively water skiing. The story was gnarly and I’ll save you the graphic details we heard, but know that surviving what he did is an accomplishment all by itself. ...

Matthew Stevens: Healthy lawn is best defense against flowering weeds
Usually flowers in the landscape are a welcome sight, particularly at the beginning of spring. However, when those flowers pop up in unusual places it can become cause for concern, or at least confusion. After all, the definition of a weed is simply a plant growing out of place. So with that in mind, I wanted to talk today about a common winter weed that is just starting to bloom....

Celia Stone: Jesus empathizes with us
Temptations come in all shapes and sizes. Perhaps we tend to categorize sins into major and minor ones, and feel good about seeming free from temptations to murder or commit adultery or steal. It might be enticing to try to minimize sins like gossiping, spending too much, eating too much or drinking too much. In reality, giving into temptations that might seem less harmful actually can hurt us and those around us in dramatic ways. Ultimately, they build barriers against what God desires to do...

A lot of us have been in a drought in our lives for so long. I’m talking about all of us who love the Lord and are obeying him. Every year we look for the Lord to bring us out of our situation. The Lord constantly tells us to trust him. We respond, “Yes Lord.” For a lot of us it has been years of waiting. Sometimes we get so...

A few last thoughts about football
The football season has come to an end and before I shift my focus from the field to the court, I have a few more thoughts and questions related to America’s favorite sport. Anyone else feel bad for San Francisco’s kicker who held the record for longest Super Bowl field goal in history, but only for about 20 minutes? Anyone else remember when kicking a field goal of over 50 yards was a massive accomplishment? ...
