Mitchell Oakley: I'm praying for rain as drought drags on in region
It’s getting serious folks. Farmers and gardeners need rain for their crops. In fact, rainfall may come too late to positively affect many of the crops that have been planted since May and June. I pray by the time you read this column our entire state will be able to get a slow rainfall over the course of several days or a week. Quick rains, most times, simply run off as quickly as they come down and erode the soil. Slow rains tend to sink...
Matthew Stevens: Plan garden around watering schedule, dry weather
Though summer officially began only a few days ago, it sure feels as though it has come in with a vengeance. We’ve had little to no rain in most parts of Pitt County over the past month, and everywhere you look there are signs of drought whether it is stunted and browned stalks of corn in the field, once-green lawns looking more like burnt-orange, or trees and shrubs with drooping or falling leaves. ...

J.M. Biggs: Avoid things that God dislikes
The church really needs to know about these things, because almost everyone is doing them. First, people are talking about preachers. I have heard with my own ears, and have seen it on social media. People talk about preachers like they are dogs. Apparently they have not read in the Bible where it says: “Touch not my anointing, or do my prophets (or preachers) no harm.” Anyone engaging in such...
Celia Stone: Church should be a welcoming place
Think of one friend or family member who is so sincerely glad to be with you and who loves you just as you are, that it feels like time together is burdenless, as if being in a judgment-free zone. Even if you haven’t showered or picked up your house in days and are wearing grungy clothes, this person never casts a disapproving glance or says something to make you feel worse than you already might. They are in your corner and clearly want what’s best...
Winning is important, but is it everything?
How important is winning? If you’re DJ Khaled, it’s all you do, so I presume it’s everything. According to Vince Lombardi however, “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing,” so I may definitely be wrong in my presumption. The people in charge of who wins the award for most valuable player of the NHL’s coveted...
