West Ham were defeated in Julen Lopetegui ’s first competitive match in charge of the club on Saturday evening. The Hammers kicked off a new era and the latest Premier League season with a frustrating 2-1 loss at the hands of Aston Villa, who picked up from where they left off last term when they finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League for the first time since the 1982/83 campaign.

Villa dominated early on at the London Stadium, going ahead with just four minutes on the clock when new £50million signing from Everton, Amadou Onana, headed home from point-blank range from a Youri Tielemans corner. They then squandered numerous golden chances to extend the lead - Leon Bailey hitting the post - before Lucas Paqueta brought West Ham level from the penalty spot after Matty Cash’s contentious foul on Tomas Soucek.
