A delivery driver accused of running over and killing a doctor in an NHS hospital car park has denied causing death by careless driving.

Gulamo Remtula, 58, has been charged over the death of Dr Anjum Afshan outside Clayponds Hospital on January 12 last year.

The driver was at the wheel of a white Mercedes Sprinter van which alleged reversed into Dr Afshan, causing fatal injuries.

It is understood he had just made a food delivery, and is accused of hitting Dr Afshan as she walked away from the hospital.

At the Old Bailey on Wednesday, Remtula pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by careless driving.

He was set free by Judge Rebecca Trowler KC until a five-day trial starting on 22 April next year.

Clayponds Hospital, in Sterling Place in Ealing, is under the West London NHS Trust, and provides rehabilitation for people recovering from severe or sudden illness.

Remtula, of Chichester Court in Queensbury, northwest London, followed the court hearing through a Portugeuse interpreter.

He has been freed on unconditional bail until his trial.

Judge Trowler ordered that the case should be brought back to court for a pre-trial hearing on October 18.
