Fourth Notting Hill Carnival reveller critical with three arrests over near-fatal stabbing of mother

Three men have been arrested after a woman was left fighting for her life after being caught in the middle of a fight while attending Notting Hill Carnival with her young child.

The mother was stabbed on Golborne Road shortly before 6pm on Sunday and police believe she was caught up in the middle of an altercation between two groups of men.

The Metropolitan Police have said in a statement that it is not yet clear if they were known to her.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder, while a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

All three were arrested at separate addresses in Hammersmith and Fulham on Tuesday morning. They remain in custody.

Commander Charmain Brenyah, the Met’s spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival , said on Tuesday: “Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the woman who is fighting for her life in hospital and with her loved ones.

“She came to Carnival to have fun, with her young child, and was caught up in the most awful violence.

“These arrests are a significant step in the investigation. They are the result of a determined effort by detectives who have worked around the clock to identify, locate and arrest these suspects.

“We should not underestimate how much more difficult those vital early stages of an investigation are when they take place in the context of a busy, crowded event like Carnival.

“I’d also like to acknowledge the incredible work of the officers, including police medics, who arrived so quickly - delivering emergency medical treatment and securing the scene to preserve vital evidence.

“Our investigations into the other incidents over the weekend continue.”The arrests come after a fourth person was left fighting for their life after suffering head injuries near Queensway station following the Carnival.

Police were called to reports of assault on Queensway at around 11.20pm on Monday.

Officers who were on duty as part of the Notting Hill Carnival policing operation responded and found a 41-year-old man with head injuries. They provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived.

The man, who police believe had been in the area for the Carnival, was taken to a west London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident and there have been no arrests.

Five people were stabbed on the closing day of the Notting Hill Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Two of those who were stabbed are in a life-threatening condition, the force said.

There was also an incident involving a corrosive substance, the Met said.

Police made at least 230 arrests on Monday, including 49 for possession of an offensive weapon.

Three firearms were seized, and 35 officers were injured.

Earlier on Monday, a man wanted for an attempted murder in Hackney in July was spotted and arrested, the Met said.

Thousands of revellers turned out for the final day of the Carnival, flooding the streets with colour, costumes, dancing and music.

A heavy police presence was visible after three people were stabbed on Sunday.

Some people were made to walk through metal-detecting “knife arches” as they arrived at the west London event.
