League Two outfit Barrow have landed a plum tie away at Chelsea in the third round of the 2024/25 Carabao Cup , while Arsenal will host third-tier Bolton.
Stephen Clemence’s side will travel to Stamford Bridge next month after beating Championship opposition in Derby 3-2 on penalties at home on Tuesday night following a goalless draw to reach this stage of the competition for the first time since 1968, having also edged out Port Vale in round one.
The only other previous tie between the two clubs came all the way back in 1948, with Chelsea running out emphatic 5-0 winners in the third round of the FA Cup.
Elsewhere, AFC Wimbledon’s reward for a shock penalty shootout win over Premier League newcomers Ipswich on Wednesday evening is a visit from Newcastle, who also saw off Nottingham Forest on spot-kicks at the City Ground.
West Ham will travel to holders Liverpool in a high-profile affair, one of three all-Premier League ties in round three along with Everton taking on Southampton and Brighton entertaining Wolves. There are also two intriguing London derbies in Brentford vs Leyton Orient and QPR vs Crystal Palace, the latter match seeing England midfielder Eberechi Eze return to Loftus Road.
Manchester United are at home in round three against Barnsley of League One, with Manchester City hosting Tom Cleverley’s Watford at the Etihad Stadium in a repeat of the 2019 FA Cup final and Wycombe following their upset away at Swansea with a home tie against Champions League qualifiers Aston Villa.
Tottenham will welcome Coventry in a match that will bring memories of an epic 1987 FA Cup final at the old Wembley, which the Sky Blues won 3-2 after extra time.
Fulham follow their comfortable second-round win at Birmingham with a trip to Championship team Preston, while it’s League One vs the Premier League again when Walsall host Leicester.
Charlie Adam returns to Stoke as the manager of League Two Fleetwood, while Sheffield Wednesday make the trip to meet Blackpool.
Third-round ties will be played across the weeks beginning September 16 and 23.
