Police were called to Waltheof Gardens at 9am on Tuesday morning to reports of a shooting.
Officers visited the scene alongside the London Ambulance Service and found a man aged in his 40s suffering with a gunshot injury.
Despite the emergency services efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A murder investigation was launched and later on Tuesday a 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, a Met Police spokesperson said.
The suspect remains in custody at a north London police station.
Detective's enquiries are ongoing but police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and do not believe the wider public is at risk.A large cordon was in place on Tuesday afternoon and several forensics officers could be seen in the road next to a police tent.
Forensics officers could be seen searching a white car and a patch of grass next to a police tent on the quiet street.
One resident described the terrifying moment he saw police trying to resuscitate the victim of the shooting while he was taking his 16-year-old son to college.
The neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Standard: “I came out my house at around 9.24am.
“I saw the police trying to resuscitate somebody there. I saw them pushing on somebody’s chest.
“I was taking my son to college. He saw the same thing I saw.
“I have lived here about 20 years. I haven’t heard of a shooting happening before in this area.”
A resident who lives close to the scene told the Standard: “I only came outside when I heard the police were here.

“There were a few police officers when I came out. I went inside straight away.
“People are usually at work or at school at 9am. I was supposed to be at work today but didn’t go. It’s generally very quiet. We love the area. It’s not a big crime area.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines said: “I am devastated by the tragic loss of life, and I recognise the concern that this incident will cause for local residents.
“I want to reassure you that we have a team of specialist officers already working diligently to establish the circumstances of this shooting.
“You may notice an increased police presence in the area as officers carry out vital enquiries. We would encourage you to speak to them with any concerns.
"If you have any information that you think may assist with our investigation, then please do not hesitate to get in touch. We want to hear from you, even if you feel like your information may be insignificant.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called at 9.11am today (15 October) to reports of a shooting in Waltheof Gardens, Tottenham.
“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.
“Our first paramedics arrived on scene in approximately five minutes.
“Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
