The Twenty Two opens first outpost in New York City

The Twenty Two — the hotel, restaurant and private members’ club — has crossed the pond, opening a second location in Manhattan’s Union Square.

“Here, service food and culture intermingle to create an atmosphere that’s both exceptional and inviting,” says Navid Mirtorabi, founder and principal of the club. “Whether it’s the New York crowd finding a slice of home in London or our international members feeling welcomed in New York, the Twenty Two facilitates connections with elegance and exclusivity.”

Situated in the heart of the Big Apple directly south of the Flatiron district, The Twenty Two’s New York club is set in what was once the Margaret Louisa Home for Protestant Women – a YMCA founded in 1891 by Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, a socialite who posed for the portraitist John Singer Sergeant . Restored under the tasteful eye of designers Alexy Kos and Che Huang of Child Studio, London, today’s building nods to its illustrious heritage.

“Our vision for this property is to blur the social lines that we’ve grown accustomed to,” says Michael Chetrit, partner and principal of The Twenty Two New York. “Never knowing who you’ll see or what kind of room you’re walking into. We want to create an environment for people to just let their guard down, and have fun. Elegantly, of course.”

The Twenty Two first opened in London in April 2022, in a 42,500 square feet Edwardian house in Mayfair. The New York property is nearly double the size, at 80,000 square feet, and features 17 suites and a rooftop penthouse overlooking skyscrapers like the Empire State Building. The second floor is a dedicated private members’ club while the ground will welcome the public for all-day dining. It is set to open in September. Other amenities such as a gym and outdoor spaces will be revealed soon.

It wouldn’t be The Twenty Two without exceptional food. At the helm of the kitchen at the in-house restaurant, Cafe Zaffri is the all-female team from New York’s favourite, Michelin-endorsed European restaurant, Raf’s (also the team behind the Michelin-starred The Musket Room). Chef Mary Ate and Executive Pastry Chef Camari Mick have received numerous accolades over their careers, including three consecutive nominations for the James Beard Awards, aka the Oscars of food.
