Met PC accused of not disclosing association with female Jihadi living with Islamic State faces misconduct hearing

A Met policewoman accused of posting a torrent of offensive messages on social media and failing to disclose her relationship with a female Jihadi will face a misconduct hearing later this month.

PC Ruby Begum was allegedly in contact with a woman who had joined Islamic State in Syria and had expressed an interest in the teachings of extremist preachers.

The 29-year-old, who worked in the Met’s Territorial Support Group that deals with public order policing, is also accused of writing “discriminatory and/or offensive comments” on her Twitter account between 2013 and 2019.

Some of the posts insulted Jewish people and mocked the 9/11 terror attacks, it is claimed. They remained visible on her account after she became a Special Constable in 2016.Ms Begum had been hailed as a role model after footage of her bravely confronting anti-lockdown protesters while wearing her hijab went viral on social media during the pandemic.

She was placed on restricted duties three years ago when the allegations first came to light and suspended by the force a year later.

Between October 21 and 23 she will face a misconduct hearing.

“It is alleged that between 2013 and 2019 PC Begum posted discriminatory and/or offensive comments on her Twitter account,” a notice by the Met Police reads.

“The posts remained visible on her account after she was attested to become a Special Constable. It is also alleged that PC Begum failed to provide full and/or honest information in the vetting process.

“It is further alleged that PC Begum failed to disclose her association with a female Jihadi living inside the Islamic State caliphate in Syria to the Vetting Unit, along with her alleged interest in the teachings of extremist preachers.”

There is no suggestion that Ms Begum tried to join IS or travel to Syria, and some of her tweets suggest she was outraged by the group’s behaviour.

In one tweet in August 2014, according to the Mail on Sunday, she wrote: “This is disgusting: (Yezidi [sic] Exodus Continues, Girls Raped by ISIS Jump to their Death [in] Mount S….[Sinjar].”
