    Fatal family dispute in New Bedford: Standard Times top stories

    As we head into a new week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

    A proposed 13-bedroom, 32-person "sober home" in a former County Street funeral parlor needs city approval. That's the Zoning Board of Appeals' unanimous ruling. NewLife LLC plans to convert the former Wilson Funeral Chapel at 479 County St. into a "congregate living arrangement for disabled individuals."

    A downtown building that last housed a craft burger restaurant is being converted into apartments . The close to $8 million rehabilitation project to develop 19 apartments at 89 N. Water St. is scheduled to begin construction this fall and be completed next fall. The development will be known as Elmwater Landing.

    A 42-year-old man was held without bail Monday, Aug. 26 following his arraignment in New Bedford District Court on a murder charge for allegedly stabbing his nephew to death during an argument Saturday afternoon.

    Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Kyle McPherson said the defendant, Juan Padilla-Santana, 42, of Puerto Rico, was staying at 68 South St. in New Bedford. His nephew was 23-year-old Omil Padilla-Corsino.

    New Bedford area schools are limiting phones in class. How the new locking pouches work.

    When students return to the Global Learning Charter Public School in New Bedford this week, they will be entering a phone-free zone.

    The 500 students in the grades 5 through 12 school will have to lock up their phones in a pouch that they carry with them throughout the day until dismissal.

    The school has invested in the Yondr system of pouches and unlocking bases to keep students from being able to use their phones during the school day.

    Once the go-to stop for coffee, breakfast and gossip, Shawmut Diner was a landmark eatery in the Whaling City.

    A staple in New Bedford at the corner of Shawmut Avenue near Route 140 since 1954, the diner was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Now this iconic stainless steel building sits in the former Atlantic Packaging factory in Greeneville, Conn. — just waiting for its next chapter.

    Transfer from Tabor Academy looking to prove himself with Dartmouth High football

    It’s a homecoming of sorts for New Bedford’s Asante Aurora.  Aurora got his start in football with Dartmouth Pop Warner.

    After playing at Tabor Academy for the past three years, Aurora has transferred to Dartmouth High on school choice and will look to have an immediate impact.

    “At Dartmouth I’m given more of an opportunity to show what I can do and more of a chance to prove myself,” the 17-year-old said. “It’s good to be back. It's where I started so it’s a good place to finish.”

    Watch video from Monday's storm that brought hail to the Southcoast

    Strong thunderstorms passed through southeastern Massachusetts on Monday, bringing flash floods and hail to places like Fairhaven and Onset.

    The National Weather Service (NWS) placed a dozen Massachusetts counties under a severe thunderstorm watch about 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26 warning of frequent lightning, wind gusts up to 65 mph, and hail as large as ping-pong balls.

    A video by Ray Goodwin shows conditions in Onset where he told Storyful that conditions went from “sunny to hail in 90 seconds.” Goodwin estimated the hail hitting his home to be about “grape-sized.”
