    When do Greater New Bedford schools open? Important dates you need to know before fall

    Students in Greater New Bedford have less than a month of summer vacation left before they head back to school to continue their education, or in the case of pre-K and kindergarten, get it started.

    Here are important dates parents and students need to know for the 2024-25 school year in the New Bedford area:

    New Bedford Public Schools: When classes start, vacations, and graduation

    New Superintendent Andrew O’Leary will lead the way this school year, but he’s no stranger to working in the New Bedford school system. He was previously the assistant superintendent and has filled multiple other roles for the city schools.

    The New Bedford schools will open with three different schedules for students:

    • The first day of school for New Bedford High School Grade 9 and 12 students only is Wednesday, Aug. 28
    • The first day for all other students grades 1 through 12 will be Thursday, Aug. 29
    • The first day at John Avery Parker Elementary School for pre-K through Grade 5 students will be Thursday, Aug. 29

    New Bedford Public Schools has the following vacations scheduled:

    • Thanksgiving break: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29
    • Holiday school vacation: Monday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Jan. 3
    • Christmas and New Year's holiday observance: Tuesday, Dec. 24, Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Tuesday, Dec. 31
    • Winter school vacation: Feb. 17 to 21
    • Spring school vacation: April 21 to 25

    The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 20, if there are no cancellations.

    The New Bedford High School Class of 2025 is scheduled to graduate on Thursday, June 10.

    Dartmouth public schools: When classes start, vacations, and graduation

    Dartmouth students in all grades will report to the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

    Dartmouth Public Schools has the following vacations scheduled:

    • Thanksgiving recess: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29
    • Holiday recess: Monday, Dec. 23 to Wednesday, Jan. 1
    • Winter recess: Monday through Friday, Feb. 17 through 21
    • Spring recess: Monday through Friday, April 21 through 25

    The last day of school will be a half-day on Thursday, June 12.

    The graduation for the Dartmouth High School Class of 2025 will be held on Sunday, June 15.

    Fairhaven Public Schools: When classes start, vacations, and graduation

    It’s time to finish up your shopping for the new school year, because it starts later this month in Fairhaven.

    • The first day for students in grades 1 through 12 will be Wednesday, Aug. 28.
    • The first day for kindergarten students will be Monday, Aug. 30.
    • The first day for pre-kindergarten students will be Wednesday, Sept. 4.

    Fairhaven Public Schools has the following vacations scheduled:

    • Thanksgiving break: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29
    • Christmas vacation: Monday, Dec. 23, through Wednesday, Jan. 1
    • Winter vacation: Feb. 17 through 21
    • Spring vacation: April 21 through 25

    The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 13, if there are no cancellations.

    The Fairhaven High School graduation is tentatively set for Sunday, June 1.

    Acushnet Public Schools: When classes start, vacations, and graduation

    It’s getting close to crunch time with the start of school coming soon.

    • Acushnet students in grades 1 through 8 and Albert F. Ford Middle School students will report for the first day of school Wednesday, Aug. 28.
    • The first day for kindergarten and pre-K students will be Wednesday, Sept. 4.
    • Acushnet high school students attend Fairhaven High School, with school starting Wednesday, Aug. 28.

    Fairhaven Public Schools has the following vacations scheduled:

    • Thanksgiving Break: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29
    • Holiday vacation: Monday, Dec. 23 through Tuesday, Dec. 31
    • Winter vacation: Feb. 17 through 21
    • Spring vacation: April 21 through 25

    The last day of school is scheduled for Friday, June 13, if there are no cancellations.

    The Fairhaven High School graduation is tentatively set for Sunday, June 1.

    Bishop Stang High School: When classes start, vacations, and graduation

    • New student orientation is Tuesday, Aug. 20.
    • Students in Grade 9 start classes on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
    • Students in grades 10 to 12 start classes on Thursday, Aug. 29

    Bishop Stang has the following vacations scheduled:

    • Thanksgiving Break: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28 and 29
    • Christmas vacation: Monday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Jan. 6
    • Winter vacation: Feb. 17 through 21
    • Spring vacation: April 21 through 25

    The last day of exams is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18.

    Bishop Stang High School graduation is set for Thursday, June 5.
