    As we head into a new week, let's take a look at the news from this past week.

    Losing the final two games of 2023 fueled the Dartmouth High football team throughout the offseason. A determined Dartmouth team will look to make an even deeper run in the playoffs this year with the return of its top three offensive players from a year ago senior quarterback Jackson Hart, senior running back Ray Gramlich, and wide receiver Markus Andrews. The trio combined for 37 touchdowns in 2023 as juniors and were all named to The Standard-Times Super Team .

    Police are investigating the shooting homicide of a Bridgewater man early Saturday, Aug. 17. New Bedford Police received 911 calls at around 12:47 a.m. Saturday regarding men fighting and an apparent gunshot in the area of 36 Acushnet Ave. Nicholas Miller, 26, of Bridgewater, was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, he was rushed to Saint Luke's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

    Nina Busnengo, 31, with a last known address in Mattapoisett, was arraigned Wednesday in New Bedford District Court on charges of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon - shod foot, and unarmed robbery in connection with the homicide of Stephen Oswald, 58.

    The fictional bar Widows Cove Tavern on Union Street in New Bedford has ties to a murder on a New Bedford scalloper in first-time author Paul Rooney’s thriller.

    The locally-based murder mystery focuses on FBI Field Office Detective Rob Ragusa's efforts to catch a killer in Rooney’s debut novel.

    Rooney started writing "Widows Cove" by focusing on the history of New Bedford and the fishing industry. He interviewed fishermen and fishing boat captains on the docks, as well as interviews with members of the State Police and Coast Guard.

    New Bedford City Council President Carney sues sheriff, alleges job discrimination

    City Council President Naomi Carney is suing former employer Bristol County Sheriff Paul Heroux for race, age, and gender discrimination in connection with losing her job.

    The lawsuit, filed in Bristol County Superior Court on June 14, states she was discriminated against by Heroux and the Bristol County Sheriff's Office on the basis of age, race, gender, and national origin, and was retaliated against after raising the issue.

    Heroux denies the claims, saying he has hired and promoted women, minorities, and older employees.

    Downtown New Bedford building going from hamburgers to housing. What to know.

    A downtown building that last housed a craft burger restaurant is being converted into apartments.

    The close to $8 million rehabilitation project to develop 19 apartments at 89 N. Water St. is scheduled to begin construction this fall and be completed next fall.

    The four-story brick building at the corner of Elm Street, which was previously the home of dNB Burgers, was purchased by Franklin Hospitality Corp. for $1.7 million in June 2023. The building has been vacant for a few years.
