National Park Service recognizes Albemarle for historic preservation

The City of Albemarle has been recognized for its historic preservation efforts, earning the designation of a Certified Local Government (CLG) by the National Park Service.
The designation highlights Albemarle’s dedication to preserving its history and cultural heritage for future generations.
“This honor is more than just a recognition of our work to preserve history; it is a testament to the incredible value of our volunteers, both past and present, who have served on the Historic Resources Commission. This achievement acknowledges the expertise and experience of our volunteers, without whom this designation would not be possible. I am honored to work alongside them and serve this wonderful community,” said Brittani McClendon, senior planner.
Certified Local Governments (CLG) are municipalities that have demonstrated, through a certification process, a commitment to local preservation and saving the past for future generations. The CLG program was federally mandated as part of an amendment to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, and is administered by the National Park Service.
Partnership between local, state and federal governments provides the opportunity to help preserve, protect and increase awareness of cultural heritage, helping communities save their irreplaceable historic resources.
Requirements to Be a Certified Local Government:
• Establish a qualified historic preservation commission.
• Enforce appropriate state or local legislation for the designation and protection of historic properties, typically through a local ordinance.
• Maintain a system for the survey and inventory of local historic resources.
• Facilitate public participation in local preservation, including participation in the National Register listing process.
• Follow additional requirements outlined in the state’s CLG Procedures.
Once certified, CLGs become an active partner in the Federal Historic Preservation Program and gain access to several benefits:
• Funding: States receive annual appropriations from the Federal Historic Preservation Fund, with at least 10% allocated to CLGs as subgrants for various projects such as surveys, National Register nominations, rehabilitation work, design guidelines, educational programs, training, structural assessments and feasibility studies.
• Technical Assistance: CLGs have direct access to State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) staff for assistance with commissions, building assessments, surveys, nominations and general preservation help. Regular training from state staff and NPS is also available.
• Sustainability: Historic preservation has proven economic, environmental, and social benefits.
Historic districts maintain higher property values, less population decline, more walkability and a greater sense of community, according to the city.
