Tuesday marked the opening day of the Section 4 girls basketball tournament, with opening-round contests in three of the six classifications.

All sectional competition in classes AAA, AA and A will be next week.

Four things to know from day one.

Sidney, TAE stars shine in OT battle

A pair of 1,000-point career scorers came up big for their teams in a Section 4 Class B opening-round contest between 10th-seeded Sidney and seventh-seeded Thomas A. Edison.

Sidney prevailed behind 36 points from Ava Cirigliano, whose bucket from underneath gave Sidney a 63-60 lead with 1:08 to play in overtime. It came after Nayla Miley hit one of two foul shots to give the Sabers the lead for good with 1:32 remaining.

Payton Littlefield closed her prep career with 30 points to pace the Spartans (11-10). Littlefield earlier this season became the career scoring leader in Edison history and ended up with more than 1,700 points.

Littlefield joined teammate Gabby Milazzo in nailing five 3-pointers Tuesday. Milazzo finished with 15 points.

    Sidney (14-7) plays at second-seeded Newark Valley (19-1) at 6 p.m. Feb. 23 in a quarterfinal.

STAC schools go 2-0 in Class B

Six of the eight remaining teams in the Class B bracket are from the Southern Tier Athletic Conference following Tuesday's results. Sidney is part of the Midstate Athletic Conference and Newark Valley is a member of the Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

STAC winners Tuesday were Binghamton Seton Catholic Central and Oneonta.

Eighth-seeded Seton downed ninth-seeded Trumansburg, 59-34, while sixth-seeded Oneonta topped IAC North Large School champion Whitney Point, the 11th seed, by a 47-36 margin.

Friday's other Class B quarterfinals: Seton at top-seeded Chenango Forks, fifth-seeded Waverly at fourth-seeded Chenango Valley, and Oneonta at third-seeded Susquehanna Valley. All are scheduled for 6 p.m.

    Odessa-Montour falls short in D

Odessa-Montour, the No. 7 seed, went on a 10-0 run to cut a 45-32 deficit to three points but couldn't get any closer in a 50-43 home loss to 10th-seeded Stamford/Jefferson in the opening round of the Class D tournament.

Gina Gavich had 18 points and five assists for O-M (7-14). Leah Antes matched her with 18 points.

Tierney Turner led Stamford/Jefferson (12-9) with 19 points, followed by 15 from Dezaraye Hillis and 10 from 25 per game scorer McKenna Hoyt.

2023 final 4 team Union Springs advances

After losing a good deal of talent from last season's team that made a run to the Class C state final four, fifth-seeded Union Springs kept its season going with an impressive defensive performance in a 39-27 home victory over 12th-seeded Groton.

In other Class C opening-round games, sixth-seeded Delhi rolled to a 64-28 win over Candor, seventh-seeded Marathon downed 10th-seeded Walton Downsville, 49-42, and ninth-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford topped eighth-seeded Southern Cayuga, 48-33, behind 17 points from Marissa Mayo.

The Feb. 23 quarterfinal matchups: B-G at top-seeded Watkins Glen, Union Springs at fourth-seeded Unatego, Delhi at third-seeded Moravia and Marathon at second-seeded Greene.
