Housing in Schuyler County is improving thanks to Habitat for Humanity , which is preparing to hand the keys over to a family moving into a freshly renovated home in Watkins Glen.

Fittingly, the group is planning to dedicate its fifth home on Sunday, Sept. 8 on Fifth Street in the Village of Watkins Glen.

The 126 Fifth St. home will be dedicated at 2 p.m. during the ceremony, which will include open tours celebrating the hard work and commitment of Habitat for Humanity volunteers and supporters in Schuyler County.

The dedication ceremony will feature remarks from Robert Groll, President of Schuyler County Habitat for Humanity, and a blessing by Father Jeffrey Tunnicliff of Saint Mary’s Church.

The house will be formally dedicated in thanksgiving to Jean Hubsch, in recognition of her loyal support of the organization.

The partner family was selected based on housing need, the ability to qualify for and hold a mortgage, and its willingness to partner in building the home. The family will soon take ownership of the house and hold a mortgage with the USDA.

Habitat for Humanity said the home on Fifth Street is a significant renovation of a century-old structure, which required extensive work, including a complete gutting of the interior and the replacement of the foundation.

Volunteers from Habitat for Humanity have been hard at work on the project for more than a year, contributing their time and skills two mornings each week.

More: These upcoming events will turn Watkins Glen into a 'race fan's heaven'. What to know.

This marks the fifth home completed by Schuyler County Habitat for Humanity, with previous projects located in the Village of Montour Falls, the Town of Hector, and the Town of Dix.
