    Vote for Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6-12; last week's winner revealed

    A scintillating postseason effort and several regular-season displays of excellence were delivered by the seven nominees for Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 6 to 12.

    Voting will be open until the end of the day Wednesday, with nominees from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.

    Nominees are based on results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by sports reporters from the publications.

    The nominees:

    Blaise Brixner, Maine-Endwell golf : Brixner continued his torrid fall season by capturing medalist honors by eight strokes at the Section 4 Class A tournament, lifting Maine-Endwell to the team title. Brixner fired a 4-under-par 67 at Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Horseheads.

    Taylor Freelove, Corning boys soccer : Freelove scored a combined seven goals in two Corning victories. He scored three times in a 5-1 win against Elmira then registered four goals and an assist in a 6-0 triumph over Binghamton.

    Riley Hubisz, Ithaca boys cross country : He won the boys race to lead the Little Red to the team title in the 15-team Bob Greene Invitational at Newark Valley. Hubisz finished the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds. He was five seconds faster than the runner-up.

    Kaelyn Katchuk, Owego Free Academy diving : Katchuk scored 612.85 points at the Elmira Express Girls Swimming & Diving Invitational, highest 11-dive total for a New York state girl. Katchuk topped the previous Section 4 record of 590.30, set last year by Corning's Brooke Terwilliger.

    Emily Nickson, Chenango Valley girls soccer : She had a pair of three-goal games as the Warriors won all three of their games during the week and clinched the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Central Division title. Nickson’s first hat trick of the week came in a 7-0 win over Binghamton Seton Catholic Central. She followed with three goals in a 10-2 victory against Binghamton.

    Sam Paske, Chenango Forks football : Paske threw for four touchdowns in a 35-7 victory over Chenango Valley as the Blue Devils improved to 5-1. He had scoring tosses of 39, 21, 18 and 16 yards.

    Darrin Walley, Walton football : Walley ran 36 times for 302 yards and six touchdowns to help the Warriors to a 54-32 victory over Susquehanna Valley.

    Chenango Valley's Doyle last week's winner

    Michael Doyle of the Chenango Valley boys cross country team was voted Athlete of the Week for the period of Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 .

    Doyle narrowly edged Thomas A. Edison football player Andrew Slaven, receiving 46.47% of the 16,085 votes. Slaven received 45.51% of the votes.

    Doyle won the boys varsity race by eight seconds at Chenango Valley's McDaniel-Baxter Invitational. His winning time on the 4-kilometer course was 14 minutes, 13 seconds.
