With most fall sports hitting their postseasons, six stellar performers are candidates for Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 20 to 26.
Voting will be open until the end of the day Wednesday, with nominees from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader.
Nominees are based primarily on results reported to bgmsports@gannett.com or events covered by sports reporters from the publications.
The nominees:
Tsadia Bercuvitz, Ithaca girls cross country : Bercuvitz continued her dominant season by running away from the field at the Southern Tier Athletic Conference championship meet at Fortin Park in Oneonta. Her time of 17 minutes, 52.4 seconds was nearly two minutes faster than the runner-up.
Vasil Brich, Owego Free Academy boys soccer : Brich scored two goals as the unbeaten River Hawks captured the Southern Tier Athletic Conference championship with a 4-1 victory over Ithaca.
Jake Browne, Tioga football : Browne delivered one of the top rushing performances in New York state history, carrying 32 times for 421 yards and eight touchdowns in a 56-28 victory over Deposit-Hancock. Based on unofficial state records kept on the website roadtosyracuse.com, Browne's rushing total was the highest in Section 4 history and his eight touchdowns tied for fifth in a game all-time in New York. South Park's Adam Nunes set the state record with 593 yards earlier this season.
Fletcher Good, Waverly football : Good carried 12 times for 100 yards and four touchdowns to help Waverly to a division-clinching 48-0 victory over Lansing.
Aviva Kaminsky, Vestal girls tennis : She helped the Golden Bears capture the Section 4 Division 1 and Southern Tier Athletic Conference team titles with a 7-0 victory over Ithaca. Kaminsky capped an unbeaten conference singles season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at first singles. She previously teamed with Aashna Ashok for the Section 4 doubles title and the duo qualified for this week's state tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing.
Tyler Mathews, Maine-Endwell football : Mathews scored touchdowns on the ground, in the passing game, and on special teams as the Spartans improved to 8-0 with a 42-14 victory over Norwich. Mathews' first score came on an 82-yard kickoff return, his second on a 48-yard run to break a 14-14 tie, and his third on a 24-yard reception.

Horseheads' Ernst voted Athlete of the Week
Horseheads High School football player Kyle Ernst was voted Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 13 to 19 after coming up big on the defensive side in a 35-20 victory over Vestal.
Ernst had a team-high 12 tackles, including seven solo stops, and returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown.
He received 55.72% of 13,007 votes submitted. Runner-up was Vestal girls soccer player Alaina Browning.
