MUNCIE, Ind. — Authorities are investigating the possible drowning death of a senior citizen in northwestern Delaware County.

Emergency personnel were called to a pond, on a property in the 13300 block of West Delaware County Road 1200-North, shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The 88-year-old victim's body was found partially submerged in the pond. He was pronounced dead at the scene, less than two miles east of Interstate 69 in Washington Township.

According to Gary Vannatta, Delaware County's chief deputy coroner, the victim — who owned the property where the fatality took place — might have suffered a sudden illness or somehow been injured before going into the water.

He was apparently in the process of unloading cement blocks into the pond.

Foul play is not suspected. The Delaware County Sheriff's Department is also participating in the investigation.

An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Vannatta said.
