MUNCIE, Ind. — A two-vehicle crash on Muncie's south side at mid-day Tuesday resulted in life-threatening injuries to at least two people.

According to Melissa Criswell, Muncie Police Department deputy chief, Delaware County emergency dispatchers received multiple calls about the crash — at 18th and Madison streets — at 11:46 a.m.

A preliminary investigation — by the MPD crash reconstruction team — determined a northbound vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a car driving westbound on East 18th Street.

The driver of the westbound car, a 52-year-old Muncie woman, was reported to be in critical condition late Tuesday afternoon. She was the only occupant of her vehicle, Criswell said.

The northbound vehicle was driven by a 14-year-old boy. That car had three passengers, females reported to be 18, 14 and 10 years old.

The occupants of that car had injuries ranging from critical to minor, the deputy chief said.

All of those injured were taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. One of the juvenile victims was later transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Muncie police detectives are also involved in the investigation. The intersection was closed for several hours in the wake of the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Muncie Police Department's detective division at 765-747-4867, or police dispatchers at 765-747-4838.
