    Driver hit while trying to turn left dies 3 days later, SC Highway Patrol says

    A driver died Saturday following a crash on Wednesday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol .

    David P. Emory, an 89-year-old Aiken resident, died in the hospital days after what Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables called an accident.

    At about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Emory was driving a 1993 Buick sedan west on Robert M. Bell Parkway in Aiken County, less than a mile from the city of Aiken, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol. The Buick was attempting to turn left onto Trolley Line Road when it was hit by a 2005 Ford coupe driving east on the same road.

    EMS took Emory to an Augusta University hospital , where he died Saturday at about 10 a.m.

    Both the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the crash.

    Through July 21, at least 502 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

    At least 19 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data. There were 38 deaths reported in the county in 2023, DPS said.
