A Blythewood High School student was arrested after bringing a knife to school, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says.

Richland deputies took a 14-year-old student into custody Monday morning after it was discovered the student was toting a knife in their book bag, according to the sheriff’s department.

The knife was initially detected by a metal detector at the school, which resulted in a school resource officer transporting the student to an administrator for further inspection. The school administrator confirmed the student was carrying a 4-inch knife in their book bag.

The teen’s parents were contacted before the student was taken into custody and charged with carrying a weapon on school property.

The student was ultimately released to their parents, the sheriff’s department said.
