More wealthy residents were living in South Carolina in 2023 than the year prior, new U.S. Census data shows .

According to the data released Thursday, there were 177,314 households in South Carolina earning $200,000 or more a year in 2023 — amounts classified as high earners by the IRS. That’s a sizable jump from the 160,452 households earning $200,000 or more a year in 2022, census data shows.

Income brackets just below that, but still including households earning six figures, also had gains year over year.

There were 157,488 households earning between $150,000 and $199,999 a year in 2023, up from 141,363 a year earlier. And there were 366,570 households in the $100,000 to $149,999 bracket in 2023, higher than 332,398 households the prior year.

South Carolina also gained more middle class residents.

    There were 676,832 households earning between $50,000 and $99,999 in 2023 — a 20,210 increase from the 658,622 households in 2022.

The increase in wealthier residents rose the state’s median income to $67,804 in 2023 from $64,115 in 2022, census data shows.
