Argument leaves one man dead and another charged with murder, South Carolina police say

One man was killed Sunday night and another is in jail following an argument that turned into a shootout, according to the Sumter Police Department .

Jeremie Devon Richardson, a 40-year-old Sumter resident, is the man who died , police said Monday in a news release.

At about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, officers found a vehicle stopped in the intersection in the Rhododendron Street area , according to the release. Inside the vehicle was Richardson, who was behind the wheel after getting shot, police said.

Richardson was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, where he later died, according to the release.

During the investigation, officers learned that the shooting happened outside a residence on Lirope Way and that it stemmed from an argument between James Christopher Wilson and a group of acquaintances who were out socializing earlier in the night, according to the release. Lirope Way intersects with Rhododendron Street.

There was no word about why the people were arguing.

Once at the Lirope Way home, Richardson got involved in the dispute and there was an exchange of gunfire with Wilson, police said.

No other injuries were reported.

Officers later found Wilson, a 38-year-old Sumter resident, at a King Street residence, where he was taken into custody, according to the release.

Wilson was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, police said.

Despite the arrest, police are continuing to investigate the shooting.
