SUV involved in deadly crash on South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

A person who was walking on a road Monday was killed in a crash with an SUV, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol .

The collision happened at about 3 p.m. in Florence County, said Lance Cpl. Lena Butler.

Both the pedestrian and a 2001 Ford Explorer were heading east on Carmon Short Cut Road when the collision happened near the intersection with Jordan Church Road, according to Butler.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

The Florence County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.

Butler said the driver was the only person in the SUV and was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the crash was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 629 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 13 people have died in Florence County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.

There was another deadly wreck in Florence County Sunday, when a pickup truck collided with a bicycle, killing the bike rider, according to the Highway Patrol.
