Driving on South Carolina roads has gotten more treacherous because of Tropical Storm Helene.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation on Friday morning recommended residents avoid travel if possible. The department had received many reports of downed trees and debris in roadways caused by strong winds from Helene.

“SCDOT crews will begin clearing roadways as it becomes safe to do so,” the department said in a press release.

For those who must travel, SCDOT asks that you use caution and report any downed trees or debris to the department directly at 855-467-2378.

As of 9 a.m. on Friday, more than 1.3 million people were reportedly without power in the state.

The National Weather Service in Columbia reported winds at 67 mph at 6:12 a.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and 82 mph in Augusta.

North Augusta, Edgefield, Aiken and all of the surrounding areas have been completely devastated. Trees uprooted, laying on homes, across roads, powerpoles snapped like toothpicks. The Augusta, GA area included. Power companies are working continuously to get power back on from all over.
