A restaurant located in downtown Columbia just steps from the University of South Carolina’s basketball arena has closed its doors, but school officials say another restaurant concept is likely coming there soon.

Angell Bros. 1801 Grille, which is in the 700 Lincoln development owned by USC across the street from Colonial Life Arena, recently closed. When a reporter went by Tuesday afternoon there was a sign on the door announcing the closure and thanking customers for their patronage.

“A new and exciting restaurant concept will be opening soon,” the sign said, and directed customers to USC’s dining website for updates.

USC spokesman Jeff Stensland said the space could reopen with a new concept in November. He said options and details are being explored, but noted The Golden Spur, a new eatery that opened in August in USC’s Campus Village, could serve as an inspiration.

The 1801 Grille opened in the 700 Lincoln development in early 2017, and was initially operated by Burke Hospitality Group in partnership with USC. That version of the restaurant closed in late 2022 . Then in Feb. 2023 the Angell Bros. hospitality group reopened the space , serving everything from stone-fired pizzas to steaks to seafood dishes and more. It was called Angell Bros. 1801 Grille up until the recent closure.

The restaurant space is located amid a host of student residences and storefronts directly across from the front entrance of Colonial Life Arena, on the southern edge of Columbia’s downtown Vista district. Other nearby restaurants include a Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Jersey Mike’s Subs, Crazy Wings , a Starbucks, and Thirsty Fellow.
