    Earthquake hits rural SC county late Thursday night, US Geological Survey says

    A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck in Greenwood County late Thursday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey .

    The earthquake, which was South Carolina’s 17th this year, hit about 11 p.m. near Coronaca in Greenwood County.

    It occurred about 1.8 miles beneath the surface, the USGS said.

    The last earthquake to hit South Carolina was Sept. 24 between Catawba, South Carolina, and Jaars, North Carolina, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said.
