The high school football season resumed Friday and Saturday in the Springfield area.

Here is the Week 2 schedule in the coverage area. This page will be updated with live results and top performers throughout the weekend.

    🏈 Top performers

    Gabe Smith, Lincoln

The senior running back opened with a 51-yard TD catch before reeling off 128 rushing yards and two TDs on 21 carries in a 41-20 victory over Southeast on Saturday.

    Jae'Von Solomon, Southeast

The senior receiver also scored three touchdowns in the Central State Eight Conference crossover game. He caught TD passes of 31 and 62 yards from sophomore QB Tony Boyd. He also returned an interception 24 yards for the other score.

Gabe Lyons and Clark Nelson, New Berlin

Lyons and Nelson combined for 267 rushing yards and five touchdowns as New Berlin defeated Auburn 34-27 for the first time in Auburn since 1997 in a Sangamo Conference game. Lyons had TD runs of 2, 26 and 5 yards and finished with 156 on the ground. Nelson had an 82-yard kickoff return and a 1-yard TD run while piling up 111 ground yards.

    Daryl Evans, Nokomis

The junior running back rushed 15 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns as Nokomis improved to 2-0 with a 49-0 shutout of Argenta-Oreana. Nokomis finished with 354 ground yards and got an extra 97 yards and a TD from junior Nolan Herpstreith.

    Rylan Reimolds, Rushville-Industry

The junior back scored two touchdowns and chewed up 162 yards on 12 carries in Rushville-Industry's 18-6 victory over Monmouth United. The Rockets finished with 271 ground yards.

    Elias Hurley, Athens

The junior defensive back returned an interception 60 yards to the end zone in a 14-7 Sangamo Conference loss to Pittsfield.

    Tyler Rench, Pana

It was the defense that led Pana to a 26-14 South Central Conference win over Carlinville on Friday night.

And despite Cash Lynch's two interceptions, perhaps no one had a bigger impact on that side of the ball than 6-foot-3 junior defensive end Tyler Rench.

When Carlinville dropped back to pass, he was either getting a paw up to block Cavaliers' quarterback Noah Byots' passing lanes, rushing the Cavs' senior QB or meeting the CHS runners at the line of scrimmage.

Ed Cross, the Pana public address announcer, was nearly constantly calling Rench's No. 16 for making key defensive plays.

"The defensive line definitely started clicking more and we started getting more physical," Rench said.

While Rench is also a receiver and tight end for the Panthers' offense, his job on Friday was primarily in a blocking role. On several of Pana's big gains, it was Rench that was ahead of the play getting a block or helping keep a lane open.

"Everybody’s got a job, and our boys can’t score unless we’ve got blockers," Rench said. "Like (running back Isaiah Harbert) said, our offensive line comes every single day and they dominate, but there’s also (defensive backs) in the secondary that we’ve got to pick up."

    Jack Jones, Auburn

The senior quarterback completed 25 of 38 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-27 home loss to New Berlin. Jones' three TD passes were to three different receivers: Brady Boylen (6 yards), Carter Hunley (6 yards) and Peyton Campbell (31 yards).
