The high school football season is chugging along past the halfway point. Here are the top performers and results around Springfield:
š Top performers
Clark Nelson, New Berlin
The senior running back rumbled for 197 yards on 20 attempts and scored three touchdowns in the Pretzels' 35-0 victory at Pittsfield. Nelson's TDs covered 75, 3 and 8 yards as New Berlin improved to 5-0.
Cam Brinkman, Sacred Heart-Griffin
The sophomore quarterback completed 9 of 10 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns in SHG's 63-6 victory over Lanphier in the Central State Eight Conference. Mylin Logan had a 7-yard TD reception, and Seamus O'Brien added a 38-yard score from Brinkman.
Talon DiGiovanni and Gage Honn, Athens
The running back tandem combined for 321 yards and six touchdowns as Athens rolled to a 67-28 win at Auburn in a Sangamo Conference game. DiGiovanni scored twice and finished with 167 yards on 18 carries. Honn ended with four TDs and rushed 13 times for 154 and also returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown on the defensive end.
Lincoln's ground game
Kyle Koehler, Paytan Bunner and Gabe Smith combined for 242 rushing yards and five touchdowns in Lincoln's 55-24 victory over Decatur Eisenhower in Central State Eight Conference play. Koehler finished with 85 yards and a TD and Bunner and Smith ran for 82 and 75, respectively, with two TDs apiece. The Railers finished with 309 rushing yards.
Drew Marr and Dane Jiannoni, Petersburg PORTA
The duo rushed for two touchdowns apiece as PORTA built a 28-0 halftime lead and held off Pleasant Plains 28-21 in the Sangamo Conference. Marr had the first two scores with TDs of 29 and 80 yards. Jiannoni had TD runs of 1 and 4.
Triston Thompson, Carlinville
The junior had a 17-yard touchdown reception and a 16-yard TD run as Carlinville defeated host Piasa Southwestern 40-0 in the South Central Conference. He finished with 52 yards rushing on seven carries and caught two passes for 30.
Braden Hutchison, Jacksonville
The junior quarterback totaled three touchdowns in a 40-0 Central State Eight Conference win over Southeast. He ran for 63 yards and two scores on just three carries and threw a 45-yard TD pass to Cross Mitchell.
Braddock Cates, Williamsville
The senior running back ran for two TDs and caught another in a 27-12 Sangamo Conference win over Stanford Olympia at Paul Jenkins Field. He tallied the opening score with an 18-yard run in the second quarter before receiving a 10-yard TD pass from Jackson Sanders in the third and sealing the win with a 24-yard run to the end zone in the fourth.
Dylan Huff, Chatham Glenwood
The junior defensive back returned an interception 14 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to cement a 34-6 Central State Eight Conference win over Decatur MacArthur, and the Titans (4-1, 3-0 CS8) remain unbeaten in league play. It was his third INT of the season.
Nokomis ground game
Juniors Nolan Herpstreith, Daryl Evans and Kadynn Petty combined for 288 rushing yards and six touchdowns in a 51-0 victory over Oakland Tri-County on Saturday. Evans ran for 86 yards and four scores, while Herpstreith had 144 rushing yards and two TDs. NHS, which led 30-0 at halftime, remains unbeaten at 5-0.
