Wyatt Mueller can get the job done through different means.

The Quincy Notre Dame senior completed a key fourth-down pass before plunging over the goal line for the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter en route to a 14-9 Central State Eight Conference win over Springfield High at Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Mueller tossed a nine-yard pass to Jack Brenner to keep the game-winning drive alive on fourth-and-4 with under three minutes remaining.

" We repped that play all of the time, just a little play-actio n," Mueller said. " I’m guessing they were keying on me running the ball because we were doing that an awful lot. But Jack (Brenner) was right there.I just pitched it down and luckily he was able to get down really quick (to catch the pass) and we just kept the ball moving. "

Mueller scored two plays later on a 3-yard run with 1 minute, 41 seconds left.

"The O-line gave me a great push to get in there and coach Jack (Cornell) drew up a great play," Mueller said. "The counter was working really well with our left side and (offensive lineman) Ryan Darnell really just got that linebacker and had a great push, so I’m super proud of our O-line and how our team played overall."

Mueller totaled five touchdowns in a 37-7 win over Sacred Heart-Griffin in Week 4 , and the Class 2A No. 3 Raiders (4-1, 3-0) now hold the sole lead in the CS8 West.

Mueller had 11 carries for 68 yards while junior running back Oliver Triplett had 47 rushing yards on 19 attempts.

QND junior QB Hunter Shuckman completed 13 of 16 passing attempts for 82 yards and a score. That included 5-yard TD pass to senior Taylin Scott for a 9-8 deficit late in the third quarter.

The Senators (4-1, 2-1) reached as far as the QND 21-yard line but stalled on their final possession after an untimely pre-snap penalty.

SHS senior running back Armanze Lewis jumpstarted the team’s opening drive with a couple of big gains before scoring on a 1-yard TD run. He totaled 21 carries for 129 yards.

Kia Rinaberger supplied the 29-yard field goal to extend the lead 9-0 to start the third quarter.

" It was nice jumping to a 9-0 lead," SHS coach Jon Hebb said, "unfortunately we couldn’t sustain it. We just had too many mistakes down the stretch and hats off to QND because they put together two drives in the second half and they were able to punch it in both times and come out with the win.

" We’re really proud of our kids because they fought and I think they showed who they are. There’s not a whole lot more you can say. "
