All seven competitors from the Springfield area were eliminated after the first day of the Class 2A/1A Illinois High School Association girls tennis state finals.

Here is how the area players fared.

Chatham Glenwood bows out in 2A

The top two singles players in the area — senior Samantha Shankland and junior Ellie Surges of Chatham Glenwood — combined to go 1-4 for the Titans on Thursday.

Shankland, the Central State Eight Conference champion and a second-place finisher at the Glenwood Sectional, lost her opening round match to Lily David of Downers Grove South 6-1, 6-0. Shankland won a consolation match by beating Vicki Lipinski of Palos Hills Stagg 6-1, 6-3. She ended the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Deerfield’s Liza Gleyzer.

Surges, second in the CS8 and third at sectional, finished 0-2. Hampshire’s Isabella Kowalak posted a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets win over Surges in the first round. Deerfield’s Maya Stolarsky knocked out Surges with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the consolation’s first round.

SHG, Rochester ends season in 1A

Sacred Heart-Griffin sent one singles player and a doubles team to the Class 1A finals and both won a match for the Cyclones.

Senior Caroline Sheehan, the Jacksonville Sectional singles champion, opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maroa-Forsyth's Isabella Griffiths. Sheehan then ran into the No. 1 seeded player, Chloe Goins of Darien Hinsdale South, and lost 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. In her first consolation match, Sheehan fell to Isabella Gomez of LaGrange Park Nazareth 6-0, 6-4.

The SHG doubles team of sophomore Lucia Hassebrock and freshman Catalina Mosquera finished 1-2.

The Cyclones lost their first-round match to 5-8 seed Anna Probst and Adi Davidson of Teutopolis 6-0, 6-0. Hassebrock and Mosquera responded by beating Joliet Catholic’s Georgia Buza and Madeline Darley 6-2, 6-2 in consolation play. Emma Davis and Abigail Harms of Bethalto Civic Memorial defeated Hassebrock and Mosquera 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation’s second round.

It was the second time the Bethalto team had beaten Hassebrock and Mosquera in a week. They knocked off the Cyclones in the sectional semifinals before winning that championship on Saturday. The SHG duo ended with a fourth-place sectional finish.

Rochester had advanced senior Julia Musgrave and junior Cora Haupt to state after the tandem finished second at the Jacksonville Sectional.

But Musgrave, who has been battling an illness this season, had to withdraw and was replaced by sophomore Molly Eichholz. Eichholz and Haupt opened the tournament with a major task and lost to No. 1 seed Shane Delaney and Clare Lopatka of Lisle Benet Academy 6-0, 6-0.

The Rochester duo closed out the tourney with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Joliet Catholic’s Megan Ardaugh and Alondra Espino in the consolation’s first round.
