RHONDA — North Stokes’ softball team advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs for the first time since the Vikings won the state championship in 2019.
On Monday, the No. 23 seeded Vikings dropped a 4-0 game against No. 2 East Wilkes and were eliminated from the playoffs.
North Stokes advanced to the third round game after beating No. 10 South Davison 18-0 in their first game, and 5-3 win over No. 7 Draughn in the second.
Pitcher Kinley Mabe struck out 10 batters and gave up one hit against South Davidson while the offense pounded out 16 hits.
Caroline Mabe and Kinley Mabe collected three hits each, while Kandence Woods, Rori Long, Lily White, and Layla Fox had two apiece. Woods recorded 4RBIs and Fox had three.
Against the Wildcats, the Vikings were trailing 2-1 going to the top of the seventh innings when they scored four runs on five hits, a walk, and a hit batsman, all after two outs.
Caroline Mabe singled with two outs and scored on an error with Woods up to bat tying the score at two each. Kinley Mabe singled moving Woods to second, and then Emma Lawson was hit by a pitch loading the bases for Rori Long. Long doubled clearing the bases making it 5-2.
East Wilkes’ Chloe Andrews threw seven complete innings striking out 17 with no walks. Kinley Mabe went six innings giving up eight hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout.
Woods had the only hit for the Vikings in the game.
North Stokes finished the season 12-13, while East Wilkes improve to 24-3.
