    North Stokes pole vaulter grabs state title

    GREENSBORO — North Stokes’ David Lee Williams continued to make history this season by winning the individual state championship in the pole vault at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 1A State Championships on May 20.

    Williams brought home gold with a jump of 15-0 after the championships were moved from Saturday to Monday due to inclement weather over the weekend.

    West Stokes’ Tate Dalton competed in the 2A meet on Friday and placed third with a jump of 12-0. His twin brother Blaise was eighth with a height of 11-0.

    Following Williams in the 1A jumps was teammates Andrew Tynio finishing fourth with a jump of 11-6, and Noah Fulp was seventh with a distance of 10-6.

    The Wildcats’ Zeb Mathis was third in the 3200 meter race and broke a school record with a time of 9:44.59. Teammate Chad Goodman was 12th in the same race with a time of 10:30.46.

    The Vikings’ Rachel Bingman and the Wildcats’ Trevor Shiffert finished in fourth place in their respected events. Bingman in the discus with a throw of 112-9 and Shiffert in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:59.64.

    Finishing fifth was North Stokes’ Chandler Sizemore in the pole vault (8-6) and West Stokes’ Karlie Butts in the shot put (34-1.75).

    Other qualifiers included West Stokes’ Ryley Bowles (1600 meter — sixth, 3200 meters — seventh), Abby Maxwell (1600 meter — ninth), the 4x800 relay team of Abby Ausborn, Mille McGee, Aaralyn Pollay, and Kayla Dietz was 13th with a season best time of 11:04.72.

    North Stokes’ Sam King was seventh in the discus and shot put and South Stokes’ Laci Morefield was 10th in the 100 meter hurdles and Kymani Brown was 14th in the 100 meter dash.
