    West Stokes tennis open season with win

    BOONEVILLE — West Stokes’ girls’ tennis team opened their 2024 season with an 8-1 win over the Starmount Rams on Monday, Aug. 12. Junior Brenna Bowman was named the player of the match by the West Stokes coaches.

    The Wildcats overall No. 1 seed, Kathryn Davis, lost an 8-6 match to the Rams’ Abby Moxley, and then the visitors swept the next eight matches.

    No. 2 Alyssa Sparks secured her first win of the season with an 8-5 win over Keely Martin, and Bowman, the No. 3 seed, beat Jaden Roberts 8-1.

    Sadie Hartle (No. 4) and Eden Goforth (No. 5) defeated their opponents 8-1, and Isabella Carter won 8-2 over Emma Hunt in singles six.

    The Cats’ Bella Fulcher won over Kaylee Spann 8-4 in an exhibition match, and Jasmine Newsome beat Rhyleigh Renager 8-6, while Isabella Jones fell 8-5 to Starmount’s Daisha Tucker.

    In the top three double matches, Davis and Hartle defeated Moxley and Roberts 7-5, Bowman and Sparks beat Adams and Martin 8-1, while Goforth and Cater won by the same score against Hunt and Garnder.

    The Wildcats and Rams played two additional double matches with West’s Laken Ford and Savannah Ingle winning 5-3 against Ellah Gonzalez and Mycah Elledge, and Bella Fulcher and Aryanna Crate beat K’ydence McGrady and Isabel Romeo 6-2.

    Coach Jessica Pegram has the largest team in recent memory for West Stokes with 15 players on this year’s roster with Sparks being the only senior. There are eight juniors, two sophomores, and four freshman.

    West Stokes (1-0) will travel to rival North Stokes on Monday, Aug. 19 at 4 p.m. The Vikings will open their season on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at East Surry.
