Election official urges caution with voting related texts; public equipment testing planned for Friday

DANBURY — Stokes County Elections Director Jason Perry urges citizens to be wary of texts and messages related to voting in the upcoming election.

Perry said he’s aware of individuals across the state — including himself — who have received such messages, and they’re not from a Board of Elections office.

“My guess is that those sending the messages are well-intentioned and not scammers,” Perry said. “But I would caution individuals about clicking on unfamiliar links (this obviously goes beyond just elections) and to instead rely on official county elections’ and state elections’ sources.”

Anyone with questions about their voter record or their voter status for the upcoming election can visit they can visit the Stokes County Board of Elections website at www.co.stokes.nc.us or the State Board of Elections website at www.ncsbe.gov, or call the Stokes County Board of Elections office at (336) 593-2409.

Voting equipment testing set for Sept. 27

The Stokes County Board of Elections will be testing the voting equipment to be used in the 2024 general election starting on Friday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. It is open to the public. The elections office is located at 1101 Main St. in Danbury.

Voter registration deadline is Oct. 11

The deadline to register to vote or to update the name or address on an existing registration is Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. to

    Registration requirements:

o At least 18 years old by Election Day (November 5th)

o A resident of Stokes County for at least 30 days prior to Election Day

    o U.S. citizen

o Not been convicted of a felony, or completed probation/parole if previously convicted of a felony

Voter registration does not transfer from another state or another North Carolina county.

An individual who has resided in Stokes County for at least 30 days prior to Election Day but has not yet registered to vote in Stokes County must complete, sign and submit a registration form to the Stokes County Board of Elections.

Election day is Nov. 5; 30 days prior is Oct. 6.

    Ways to register to vote:

o Completing the standard, statewide registration application, which is available at the Stokes County elections office, local public libraries, and at www.co.stokes.nc.us (go to the Board of Elections page listed under ‘Our Departments’). A Stokes County resident can also call the elections office at (336) 593-2409 or email the office at vote@co.stokes.nc.us to have a form sent to them.

The completed, signed form can be mailed to the elections office, or hand-delivered. An individual can also come to the elections office in Danbury and complete the form.

o Through the DMV: Use NC Division of Motor Vehicle (NCDMV) services. More information can be found at https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/online/Pages/voter-registration-application.aspx

In addition to completing a voter registration form, in order to register for the first time in Stokes County, an individual already registered in the county can also use the form to update name or address within the county.

    More deadline information:

A registration postmarked by Oct. 11 is considered timely.

If emailing or faxing a registration, the deadline is also Oct. 11 at 5:00 p.m.

However, if a voter is registering for the first time in Stokes County, the original registration form that was emailed or faxed must then be received by mail (or delivered in-person) by Oct. 16 to complete the registration process.

If the original form is not received, the individual will not be registered to vote.

An individual can also use a registration form to change their party affiliation.

Party affiliation will not affect the ballot a voter receives for the upcoming general election. All Stokes County voters will receive the same ballot for this election.

Voters are encouraged to check their registration status at https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/ (type in name, year of birth, and county) or by contacting the Stokes County elections office.
