    Lady Wildcats clinch back-to-back Conference Championships

    KING — West Stokes’ girls tennis team notched back-to-back Mid-State 2A Conference Championships with the combination of the Wildcats’ 9-0 win over McMichael on Sept. 30 and Morehead’s forfeiture on Oct. 1.

    Junior Kathryn Davis defeated the Phoenix’s Mica Giffin 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot, and the Cats’ Brenna Bowman beat Reagan Lambert 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 2 hole.

    Senior Alyssa Sparks won at No. 3 over Phoebe Edwards 6-0, 6-0, and Sadie Hartle won in the four seed over Darcey Haley 6-0, 6-1.

    No. 5 Chloe Paitsel returned from the injured list and defeated Tyler Leggett 6-1, 6-0, and No. 6 seed Eden Goforth won over Addison Woods 6-0, 6-0.

    The Wildcats’ Isabella Jones won in an exhibition match against Amy Elizbeth Owens 8-3.

    In doubles competition Davis/Hartle won over Griffin/Lambert 8-1, Sparks/Bowman defeated Edwards/Leggett 8-0, and Goforth and Isabella Carter beat Haley/Woods 8-0.

    The Wildcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 10-3 and was 6-0 in league play. The team’s next match will be the Mid-State 2A Conference Tournament that will be hosted by McMichael at Western Rockingham Middle School on Monday, October 7 at 12 p.m.

    On Tuesday, Oct. 1 rivals North and South Stokes squared off against each other in Walnut Cove. The Vikings won 7-2 over the Sauras.

    South Stokes’ No. 1 seed Aubri Derrenbacher earned the team’s only individual win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Rori Long.

    The Vikings’ Ila Hassan defeated Alice-Kay Ogburn 6-0, 6-0 in the battle of the two seeds, Reagan Dixon won 6-1, 6-0 against Rylie Fagg, and Riley Flinchum beat Aliza Bullins 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 seeded match.

    South Stokes forfeited the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds and trailed 5-1 entering doubles play.

    No. 1 Derrenbacher/Ogburn (SS) defeated Amillia Lynch/Dixon 8-6, No. 2 Flinchum/Samantha Hennis (NS) defeated Fagg/Bullins (SS) 8-2, and the Sauras forfeited the No. 3 seeded match.

    North Stokes improved to 10-4 overall and 7-4 in the Northwest 1A Conference. South Stokes fell to 0-10 overall and 0-10 in league play.

    The Vikings will host East Wilkes on Oct. 2 to round out conference play and will then welcome East Surry on Oct. 3 in nonconference action. South Stokes will finish its’ regular season play at Starmount on Oct. 2, and host Elkin on Oct. 3.

    The Northwest 1A Conference Tournament Championship will be played on Oct. 8 at Elkin City Park starting at 2 p.m.
