A South Carolina man arrested for the murder of his missing girlfriend allegedly buried her in a wooden box in the backyard of a Myrtle Beach home, according to a Myrtle Beach Police arrest warrant.

Sheridan Fogle, 54, of Orangeburg, is accused of killing Penni Whiteside, who was 51 at the time of her disappearance. He was arrested Aug. 30, 2024, and is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bail.

Whiteside’s remains were found on June 12, 2024, after investigators obtained a search warrant for the property.

The arrest warrant originated from a missing person case and the original incident on May 11, 2022, in the 600 block of 1st Avenue South.

The pair had allegedly been living together in an apartment at a 607 1st Ave. when Whiteside went missing in 2022, according to Myrtle Beach Police.

They had been living together since 2016 and got engaged before breaking up in the fall of 2021, according to November 2021 Myrtle Beach Police reports.

A missing person investigation began in May 2022 after Whiteside’s brother told police he and others had not heard from her since Jan. 3, 2022, according to the missing person report.

Police were told by neighbors that they believe Whiteside may be buried in the backyard of the home they shared.

Neighbors told police Fogle had mentioned burying something in the backyard and became “territorial” when people got close to the fire pit, the arrest warrant stated. Police used a search warrant to search the backyard on June 12 and found a wooden box containing human remains.

The remains were confirmed to be Whiteside’s, whose autopsy revealed she died from “homicide by unspecified means.”

Neighbor Edward Shinn Jr. said Tuesday that he had moved in around six months before Whiteside disappeared and didn’t think much about the couple except that they owned a lot of stuff. He was surprised to learn Whiteside’s remains were in the backyard, especially because the yard is small.

The Sun News reached out to Whiteside’s family and they declined to comment.

The arrest warrant said that Whiteside and Fogle had a history of domestic violence, including an arrest of Fogle prior to Whiteside going missing.

In November 2021, police were sent to the couple’s apartment on a domestic violence call. Whiteside said during an argument that Fogle punched her in the chest which caused her to fall down. Similar incidents had happened in the past, she said. Shortly after she kicked Fogle out, he came to the apartment on Nov. 20 to collect his belongings.

In December 2021, Whiteside called police over a burglary and said Fogle had a key to the home but was not allowed inside. Fogle had allegedly taken her credit and debit card.

“This is a tragic loss of life and a senseless crime of violence,” Myrtle Beach Police posted on Facebook. “Please continue to pray for the family and friends of the victim.”
