Myrtle Beach residents want to know, what’s going on with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and their stadium?

In order for the team to remain in the area, the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County will have to pay to implement millions of dollars worth of changes to their current stadium, according to Minor League Baseball standards.

In a statement to local television station WPDE, city spokeswoman Meredith Denari said the costs for renovations range from $15 million to $80 million.

The Pelicans have played games all summer at TicketReturn.Com Field, at 1251 21st Ave. N., in downtown Myrtle Beach.

The stadium is co-owned by the City of Myrtle Beach and Horry County, with the city owning 70% and the county 30%, city documents said.

The lease agreement, first signed in 1998, said the Pelicans could use of the stadium through 2018. According to previous reporting , the city and county have since approved multiple extensions, most recently through the end of the 2024 season.

Beyond the need to extend that lease, the Pelicans also need to at least have a plan in place by the start of the 2025 season to bring its stadium within compliance of Major League Baseball standards.

At Tuesday’s monthly City Council workshop meeting, city officials met in executive session to once again discuss their ongoing contract negotiations with the Minor League Baseball team.

Their final decision remains publicly unknown as of Wednesday morning.

The same day as the workshop meeting, Myrtle Beach City Councilman Bill McClure posted a message on his campaign’s Facebook page asking for the community to consider how much keeping the team in town might cost taxpayers.

McClure’s post said the estimates for the stadium renovations ranged from $20 million to $61 million.

Horry County spokeswoman, Mikayla Moskov, said she did not have anything further to provide about the negotiations on Tuesday evening via text message.

Executives at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have not returned The Sun News’ repeated requests for comment as of Wednesday morning.
