    Mold, rodent droppings & more in latest Myrtle Beach, SC area restaurant inspections

    Recent South Carolina Department of Agriculture inspections found rodent droppings, mold, dirty food prep surfaces and more in restaurants around Myrtle Beach. The department is responsible for regularly inspecting the health and safety of retail food establishments in the state.

    Here are the lowest scores reported in Horry and Georgetown County from Aug. 23 to Aug. 30, the date with the most recently available inspection reports.

    Tasty Crab House

    740 Oak Forest Lane, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

    Score: 78

    An Aug. 23 routine inspection of Tasty Crab House found several violations, including raw shrimp stored at unsafe temperatures and oysters without the date of sale marked and not stored in chronological order.

    Dates were also not marked on ready-to-eat foods and, during the inspection, food was being stored on the floor and prepared below chemical dispensers. A followup inspection was conducted on Sept. 3, but the report is not yet publicly available.

    Manta Sushi Steak Bar

    1206 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

    Score: 82

    At a routine inspection of Manta Sushi Steak Bar on Aug. 28 foods like raw fish, cream cheese, tamago and cooked chicken were stored at unsafe temperatures. The inspection report also noted that a chlorine dish machine had inadequate levels of chlorine sanitizer, liquids were being scooped with cups without handles and hood filters were soiled. A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Sept. 8.

    VFW #10420

    4359 Highway 17 Bypass, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576

    Score: 83

    A routine inspection of the Murrells Inlet VFW Post 10420 on Aug. 28 found mold and bacteria buildup on the chute in an ice machine and foods like tuna salad, cheese, chopped lettuce and cooked ribs stored at unsafe temperatures.

    Other violations included food contact items stored on the floor, wet towels not submerged in sanitizer and chemical bottles stored on a shelf over food contact services. A followup inspection will be conducted on Sept. 8.

    Flaming Fin

    154 Sapwood Road Ste. 105, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579

    Score: 83

    An Aug. 30 routine inspection of Flaming Fin found violations including dried food on peeling utensils, a fly light above a food prep table and fly strips hanging over prep surfaces and equipment.

    According to the report, inspectors also observed frozen sauce containers stored in a raw chicken wing box, utensils without handles being used to scoop food, cases of frozen food stored on a freezer floor and a chlorine dish machine with inadequate levels of chlorine sanitizer. A followup inspection is scheduled for Sept. 10.

    Billy the Kid’s Restaurant

    3456 Sea Mountain Highway, Little River, SC 29566

    Score: 84

    A routine inspection of Billy the Kid’s Restaurant on Aug. 27 found rodent droppings in the kitchen, steak stored at unsafe temperatures and food and ice stored on a freezer floor. Other violations included unclean stove and shelf surfaces, unclean hood filters, rusted shelves and grease accumulation on the cook line floor. A followup inspection will be conducted on Sept. 7.
