    UPDATE: Schools affected. Myrtle Beach, SC area closings and cancellations due to Helene

    The Myrtle Beach area is expected to feel the effects of Hurricane Helene as it makes landfall in Florida.

    The National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, said that North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach are under a tropical storm warning.

    The storm is expected to bring gusty winds, heavy rain, flooding and isolated tornadoes.

    Some events and activities have already been canceled because of the storm.

    Sports events canceled

    Conway Parks and Recreation announced that all youth sports scheduled for Friday night are canceled, according to a Facebook post.

    Georgetown County schools go virtual

    Georgetown County School District will have an e-learning day Friday because of expected inclement weather, the district posted on its Facebook page.

    Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade will receive learning packets. Students in grades 3 through 12 will be assigned lessons through Google Classroom. All assignments must be completed and turned in within three school days in order for a student to be marked present for the eLearning day, the post said.

    In the event there are power or Wi-Fi outages, extensions to the due date will be announced, the post said.

    HGTC goes virtual

    Horry-Georgetown Technical College has announced that it will move to virtual operations Friday due to the potential impact from Hurricane Helene.

    An email said that all in-person classes will move to online and remote learning. Students are advised not to report to clinicals, internships, preceptorships, or any other in-person instructional programs.

    HGTC plans to resume normal operations on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, the email said.

    After-school programs canceled

    After school programs at Pepper Geddings and Mary C. Canty recreation centers in Myrtle Beach have been canceled for Friday because of the pending storm, according to the city of Myrtle Beach.

    The city posted the information on its Facebook post.

    Farmers market canceled in North Myrtle Beach

    The North Myrtle Beach Farmers Market has been canceled for Friday, Sept. 27, because of the potential storm affects from Hurricane Helene, according to the city in an email.

    The city says it is monitoring the storm for any other closings or cancellations.

    Horry County schools close

    Horry County Schools will have an e-learning day Friday because of the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

    The Grand Strand area is under a tropical storm warning as the hurricane that is making landfall in Florida will bring wind gusts in excess of 40 mph and heavy rain on Friday morning.

    Due to safety concerns about transporting students on school buses, the district has made the decision to close schools and instead have an e-learning day for students and staff on Friday, according to schools spokesperson Lisa Bourcier by email.

    Friday’s events for chili fest canceled

    Organizers of the Beach ’n Chili Fest at 810 N. Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach have announced that the Friday event has been canceled due to potential weather impacts to the area from Hurricane Helene, according to a press release.

    The Community Challenge cook off, which was scheduled for Friday, will now take place on Saturday. All festival activities planned for Saturday and Sunday are scheduled as normal.

    Horry County schools reschedule games

    Myrtle Beach area high schools rescheduled their Friday football games ahead of the weather expected to hit the Grand Strand this weekend.

    Games were moved to Wednesday, including Myrtle Beach High School, Loris High School which was to play Socastee High School; and Green Sea Floyds.
