City approved mining under Gordon Moore Park
ALTON — Despite complaints from residents and fears of mine subsidence, the Alton City Council approved the leasing of mineral rights for tunneling under Gordon Moore Park. The limestone quarry, then owned by Mississippi Lime Company, was told in 1979 by vice-president of Illinois operations for Mississippi Lime Co., E.M. Sipprelle, that "The factor of safety is such that we would guarantee that no subsidence will ever occur" according to an article in The Telegraph in June of 1979.
