Downtown Macon will look a little greener as the Fig and Ivy Plant Shop , owned by Taylor Mitcham, is open and holding its grand opening Friday and Saturday.

Mitcham, a hospice nurse, always loved plants and gardening. She started her plant business three years ago traveling to festivals such as the Mulberry St. Arts and Crafts Festival and other pop-ups.

However, her life took a turn at the beginning of the year.

“With the help of my family, I was able to take time off of work and take over the care of my grandfather with Alzheimer’s in January,” Mitcham said. “During this time I decided to pursue my dream of opening a storefront.”

Following her grandfather’s death in August, Mitcham said she knew it was time to open her dream store. Mitcham explained that she benefited greatly from the hospitality and uniqueness of Macon while she was a student at Mercer University and hopes to give that back to others through Fig and Ivy Plant Shop.

The plant shop offers quality houseplants, planters, handmade unique planters, macrame, plant supplies and accessories. Mitcham also offers re-potting and plant rehabilitation services.

The grand opening was scheduled for Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mitcham said the event will include free gifts with every purchase, refreshments, and a plant basket raffle.

“I hope that this store serves as a place of joy, education, and community for Macon,” Mitcham said.

Fig and Ivy Plant Shop is at 361 2nd St. in downtown Macon.
