Calling all ghouls, goblins and witches: spooky season is upon us.

To get some of the best scares around, Macon residents might not have to trek all that far.

“Looking for the best place to celebrate Halloween? Head to Macon, Georgia,” Travel + Leisure writer Stacey Leasca says.

So, what makes Macon one of the best places for Halloween? Here’s what to know:

According to Leasca, Macon is the “perfect place to celebrate this particularly ghoulish time of year,” for several reasons. The first being a very witchy event.

Macon’s Witches Float is one for the local covens and one that Halloween lovers don’t want to miss. Paddle your way down the Ocmulgee River in style (brooms and hats encouraged) at this fourth annual family-friendly event. The event promises to be a “spellbinding afternoon on the water” on Oct. 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online.

Leasca also noted several haunted houses in Macon to visit.

“You see, the town is home to nearly 180 Victorian mansions that are all pretty darn spooky and absolutely filled with ghosts,” she said.

Properties like the Grand Opera House, 1842 Inn and the Douglass Theatre are just a few chilling favorites among locals and tourists in Macon.

Last, but certainly not the least spooky, are the sinister walking tours like the Haunts & History on the Hill or Saints and Sinners in Macon.
