As Hurricane Helene intensifies in the western Caribbean, the Peach State is at risk for widespread power outages, wind damage and flash flooding, according to forecasters.

Weather experts and government officials advise Georgia residents to prepare before Helene makes landfall Thursday evening, expected to be a Category 3 hurricane when it reaches land. Preparation is essential to minimizing the impact of severe weather, officials say.

Here’s how you can stay ahead of the storm:

    Create an emergency kit

Government officials say the following items are important to have handy:

    • 3-day supply of water for evacuation, 2-week supply of water for home

    • Store non-perishable and/or easy-to-prepare food items

    • Flashlight and extra batteries

    • First aid kit

    • At least a one-week supply of medications and medical items

    • Sanitation and personal hygiene items

    • Copies of important family documents

    • Store cell phone chargers

    • Family and emergency contact information

    • Extra cash

    • Local map and radio

    Secure Property

    • Keep trees and shrubs well trimmed to prevent substantial property damage

    • Place valuables and important documents in a waterproof container on the highest level of home

    • Use sandbags to reduce flood damage

    • Anchor or bring in any outdoor furniture that is not secure, including trash cans and decorations

    • Cover windows with hurricane shutters

    • Clear debris from gutters and drains

    • Review your insurance policy and talk to your insurance provider about flood damage

    Have an evacuation plan

    • Fill gas tank(s)

    • Decide where and how to reconnect with family members

    • Know your evacuation zone

    • Be aware of the nearest shelter or hotel

    • Plan ahead for pets/service animals

    Be ready for power outages

    • Charge up cellular devices and power banks in advance

    • Set refrigerator to the coldest setting temperature. Keep freezers closed to avoid food spoiling

    • Stock up on batteries and portable chargers

    • Stay away from downed power lines

    • Call 911 to report any fallen trees that are blocking roadways.

The FEMA and Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency websites have additional emergency preparedness information.

we can't bottle up to save electricity from Georgia power. it will for sure go off. I am very surprised it's not off already. any rain drop within 3 miles Georgia power will go off for hours. across the road from me is another electric company and it never goes off. we can't understand the difference and we pay the highest price around.
