The Middle Georgia area is under severe weather watches ahead of Hurricane Helene’s expected landfall late Thursday.

As the storm strengthens, several organizations and agencies have opened their doors as evacuation shelters.

Here is a list of emergency shelters county-by-county:

    Houston County

    Monroe County

The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency is activating four emergency evacuation shelters. The shelters will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, and they remain open until 5 p.m. on Friday, unless weather changes cause the shelters to change hours. Evacuees are encouraged to bring their own non-perishable food items.

    • New Providence Baptist Church at 260 Highway 41 South
    • Monroe County Recreation Department at 100 Dan Pitts Drive
    • Culloden City Hall at 9 College Street

    • High Falls Station 2 at 42 Towaliga River Drive. This is the only pet-friendly location.

    Peach County

This list may be updated as more shelters are announced.

I get the need for shelter for the homeless, but do people in GA go to shelters for a low level 1? You'd live in a shelter if you did that in FL.
