The Nashville area will experience scattered thunderstorms on Friday, with the potential for damaging winds and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service expects additional showers and storms to develop throughout the morning across Middle Tennessee then move southeastward through the area into the afternoon.

"Some of these storms could become severe and produce damaging straight-line winds and locally heavy rainfall, with the best chance for any severe storms late this morning into the afternoon," said National Weather Service Lead Forecaster Sam Shamburger.

At this time, it's unclear just how strong or widespread the storm activity will be.

Later in the morning after daytime heating kicks in, either remnants of early morning storms or additional activity is expected to re-intensify/develop over northern counties before moving southeast in the afternoon, said the weather service.

The storm activity is expected to last throughout the weekend in Middle Tennessee.

On Saturday, storms are expected in the morning and could continue throughout the afternoon, depending on how strong the early day activity is. The severity of the storms remains uncertain, said the weather service, however Saturday's storms also have the ability to produce damaging winds.

Also on Friday, the weather service extended a heat advisory issued for lower Middle Tennessee counties including Giles, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lewis, Perry and Wayne. According to the weather service, the area can expect heat index values as high as 105. The heat advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses, said the weather service.
