East Robertson running back Isaiah Groves' night was cut short after Groves went down with a left knee injury on the first possession of his team's TSSAA football game Friday against Liberty Creek.

Groves made a cut on a running play and fell to the ground. East Robertson coach Chase Brooks decided to be cautious and didn't put his star player back into the game as East Robertson rolled to a 30-0 win over the Wolves.

"It was a non-contact play, but we didn't want to take any chances with Isaiah because he's got a bright future ahead of him," Brooks said. "He got up off the ground and was walking around on the sideline and cheering on his teammates the rest of the game."

Groves is expected to have an MRI early in the upcoming week to determine the severity of the injury, Brooks said.

The three-star running back, ranked as the No. 20 prospect in Tennessee, according to 247Sports Composite, committed to Georgia Tech in June after fielding offers from NC State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kentucky, Missouri and Indiana, among others.

He's the second Power Four recruit from the Nashville area to go down with an injury in Week 1 and the second player from The Tennessean's 2024 Dandy Dozen list to be injured. Oakland's Daune Morris suffered an ankle injury in Friday's win against Independence. Morris is ranked No. 3 on the Dandy Dozen list; Groves is No. 11 .

Groves ran for 3,085 yards and 31 touchdowns on 277 carries last season, leading East Robertson to a 13-2 record and its first Class 2A state title appearance. He was named 2A Mr. Football and is among the favorites to win the award this season.
