Why London Bironas, son of Titans great Rob Bironas, switched to Stanford football

Brentwood Academy kicker London Bironas flipped his commitment from Princeton to Stanford football last week for reasons fairly simple.

Under the proposed multibillion-dollar NCAA settlement of three athlete-compensation antitrust cases, an increase in scholarships — and direct revenue sharing between schools and athletes — is expected ahead of the 2025 season.

Stanford didn’t have a scholarship for Bironas initially but called to inform him that had changed. Princeton and other Ivy League schools do not offer scholarships.

“I flipped (the commitment) because of that,” Bironas said. “A couple other schools had been calling . . . But from Day 1 I’ve been about academics and athletics, and Stanford has both. Princeton has a great combination of both as well. But Stanford has always been my dream school and I'm happy to get that full scholarship.”

Bironas, the son of former Tennessee Titans kicker Rob Bironas, is the No. 8 kicker and No. 16 punter nationally from the 2025 class, according to Kohl’s Professional Camps.

London's other offers include Auburn, Vanderbilt, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Cornell, Harvard and Army.

His dad, a 2007 Pro Bowler who made 239 of 279 field goals in nine seasons with the Titans, died in a car accident in 2014. Rob had four game-winning field goals in 2005 and a career-long conversion from 60 yards in 2006.

In 1998, Rob was a semifinalist for the 1998 Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s best kicker, while playing at Auburn. London grew up an Auburn fan.

“I strongly considered (Auburn),” London said. “I would say the only reason I didn't go was the kicking room they had. There wasn’t an opportunity to get on the field and they have a strong line of kickers. They’re just booked up. It was just a preferred walk-on spot.”

London made a 46-yard field goal with ease and converted all three point-after attempts in Brentwood Academy’s season-opening 31-24 loss at CPA last week. He wants to focus on only kicking in college. He will compete for Stanford’s punting job, he said, but likely will be a backup.

“It’s hard to balance both,” he said. “They’re both different swings, different mindsets going in. My goal is to get to the NFL for kicking. I don’t see punting helping me get there.”
