Tennessee Titans coach Brian Callahan remains hopeful that veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins will recover from his knee injury in time to return for the team's Week 1 game against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8.

"We’ll see where he’s at after the weekend. He’s progressing. He’s in a good place," Callahan said Thursday. "It’s just going to be a matter of how he feels during practice next week and if he’s going to be able to play at his best. We’re not going to rush him back from it at any point. As long as he feels good and feels like he can play at a high level, he’ll be ready to roll."

Hopkins hasn't practiced since the end of July as he's dealt with a knee injury. The four-time All Pro has missed four weeks since the injury, satisfying the timeline of the initial prognosis for how long he'd be away. Still, Callahan says he's unsure if Hopkins will practice Wednesday when the Titans begin on-field preparations for their first game week of 2024 .

As Callahan sees it, the plan is to gather input from Hopkins and the Titans' athletic training staff to determine whether Hopkins playing will be the right idea.

"It’s time to play now. It changes (recovery times) a little bit," Callahan said. "Guys tend to fight through things at a higher rate when games are on the line."

Without Hopkins, the Titans' starting receivers figure to be Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd and Treylon Burks. Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Jha'Quan Jackson are the only other receivers on the active roster. Mason Kinsey and Bryce Oliver are the Titans' receiver options on the practice squad.
