Alex Bowman was disqualified from Sunday's Bank of America Roval 400 NASCAR Cup Series race and eliminated from the playoffs after failing post-race inspection.

NASCAR announced Sunday that Bowman's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet did not meet the minimum weight requirements in post-race inspection at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Bowman finished 18th on the track in Sunday's race, a cutoff race at the end of the Round of 12 in the playoffs, but is now scored in 38th position.

NASCAR Cup Series managing director Brad Moran said the No. 48 didn't meet the specifications on the car's first attempt at inspection. Moran then detailed the process to allow the teams to try and meet the minimum weight requirements.

Moran said teams are allowed to fuel the car, run all of the pumps and ensure the car has the fluids it needs to run properly before being weighed again.

"We give the teams every opportunity to try to meet the minimum weight. ... We re-scaled it and it still didn't meet the weight," Moran said. "They're allowed half-a-percent of a weight break, which is about 17 pounds. That's what they were allowed, and it was more than that."

By virtue of Bowman's disqualification, Joey Logano will advance into the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. Logano finished eighth in Sunday's race but had originally missed the playoffs by four points, behind Tyler Reddick.

Hendrick Motorsports wrote on Twitter/X on Sunday that the team will decide on Monday whether or not to appeal the penalty.
